The AKC standard for the Malinois states (emphasis added):
"Correct temperament is essential to the working character of the Belgian
Malinois. The breed is confident, exhibiting NEITHER SHYNESS NOR
AGGRESSIVENESS in new situations. The dog may be reserved with
strangers but is affectionate with his own people. He is naturally
protective of his owner's person and property without being overly
aggressive. The Belgian Malinois possesses a strong desire to work
and is quick and responsive to commands from his owner."

When one is considering the different temperaments among the dog breeds it
is evident that we really do not want the same temperament in all breeds.
The Malinois is considered a working dog which may make some of his
characteristics less tolerable. The genes for both herding and guarding
are still present today. He is a herding dog with territorial
instincts.
Proper socialization is essential for the young Malinois.
Early introduction to children, other dogs, cats, noise, traffic is
absolutely necessary!! |

Shyness is not correct in a Malinois.
He should be confident when approached but he is not expected to make
overtures to strangers. Faulty temperament does show up in the breed
and buyers should be very careful when choosing a dog or a puppy.
Puppies can be playful, rough or inattentive but a puppy that exhibits
shyness, growls, or hides behind his owner should be avoided. |
